Experiencing The Full Swing Motion Without The Equipment
Many of
the errors in the full swing can be corrected through practicing without
a club and ball. Problems in the golf swing such as club position,
improper weight-shift, tension in the set up and general lack of body
motion are all examples of errors that can be corrected without a club
or a ball. The full swing motion is a very complex motor skill. By
creating motion without the club, you can develop the basic coordination
of the swing without the intimidation of club and balls. The emphasis
should be on movement and freedom in swinging.
In the early
stages of learning the golf swing using a golf ball can actually inhibit
learning. Beginners are very influenced by where the ball goes. If you
see a ball slice, you will automatically swing across the ball to try to
make the ball go straight. When the ball is not there, you don't focus
on the ball and can be more focused with what your swing looks and feels
like.
To practice
proper fundamentals without a ball, place a club on the ground parallel
to the target line. The arms and shoulders should be free of tension
when at address. Practice swinging the arms on the club line back and
through. As the arms begin to swing past the legs and up, allow the body
to respond to the swinging motion. Feel the weight shift to the rear
side by turning the target knee into the rear knee allowing the target
heel to raise slightly off the ground. Feel the weight shift back to the
target side by returning the target heel to the ground and turning the
rear knee to your target knee. Relax and create a lot of motion while
swinging.
Nothing can
replace good fundamentals. By creating motion without the club or ball,
you can development the coordination and movement of "swinging the club"
not "hitting the ball". Practice, practice, practice! When you feel like
the confidence in your swing is ready, take it to the practice range for
the test. Good luck!
